Threats to Independent Contractors
Chances are if you’re not an independent contractor, you know someone who is. We are everywhere, and we need your help. There has never been a more important time to get involved in the fight to protect the rights of independent contractors to choose to work independently.
Independent contractors are significant contributors to the economy and to job creation. However, there are fast-moving efforts under way to restrict or do away with the independent contractor model. A multi-front assault is intensifying at both the federal and state levels that could force thousands of independent contractors to close their businesses, lose their employees and work as traditional, salaried employees.
If this happens, there will be disastrous consequences to the economy. Unemployment will rise as companies reduce the number of workers they engage, economic recovery will stall as fewer new jobs are created and consumers will see higher prices for everyday services.
Even the threat of government action is having a chilling effect. The uncertainty and fear of prosecution is making it more difficult for businesses and independent contractors to work together.
