Recent Jobs Report Highlights Need for Independent Contractors
We at It’s My Business are heartened by November’s strong jobs report from the Department of Labor, which showed more than 300,000 new jobs created.
But politicians taking a victory lap are missing an important part of the picture: Long-term unemployment and under-employment remain a serious problem. A full 2.8 million people have been out of work for more than six months, and nearly seven million people are working part-time jobs but want full-time work.
Here at It’s My Business, we are champions of the myriad employment opportunities provided by independent contracting – jobs with a proven economic track record that enable Americans to earn income for themselves and develop their skills, as well as a business. These options for employment that offer choice and flexibility are critical in the current job market and economic landscape.
Unfortunately, government entities, at both the state and federal levels, continue to promote confusing rules and support misguided investigations that ultimately act as a deterrent to independent contractors and the companies that work with them.
That is a problem for our economy, as numerous studies have shown that small businesses have been responsible for the job growth in our economy for decades. Independent contractors are a vital part of the small business community and our economy, by giving people the chance to start their own businesses, develop their skills and hire other people.
In fact, independent contractors, at more than 10 million strong, together earn $626 billion in annual income, according to the most recent figures from the federal government.
At a time when we all must do our part to help the millions of Americans who want a good job, the government should not be making it harder for Americans to earn a living and expand their businesses.
